INTRODUCTION
Achiltibuie, Oil On Canvas, 2013, 54"x54". £5,000.
Philip Duthie is an artist whose work traverses the boundaries of landscape painting and abstraction. The paintings featured on this site are part of an ongoing series exploring the natural environment in works that use simplified geometry and the physicality of paint to represent the intangible qualities of light reflecting on water or breaking through cloudy skies and to suggest the atmosphere of places visited.
The luminous quality of the light where the sea meets the land around Scotland's coasts, from the silvery grays of the North Sea to the almost Mediterranean blues and greens of the Western fringes and the Hebridean Islands, is a constant source of inspiration.
The Artist's travels around Europe ( from the Iberian Peninsula to Greece and north to Scandinavia ), Russia and the Eastern Seaboard of the U.S.A. and Canada have also provided rich subject matter.
During 1989-'90 he was the recipient of The Scottish Arts Council's Amsterdam Studio Bursary and spent 12 months living and painting in The Netherlands.
Heavily worked layers of richly glowing pigments are scraped back to reveal underpainted colours creating a visual push/pull of frontal plane and illusionistic depth, echoing the fluid undulation of tides and clouds.
In an earlier series of paintings influenced by an Artist's Residency in Grizedale Forest in Cumbria and many walks through the woodlands of both the Highlands and Lowlands of Scotland the vertical striped format suggests glimpses of light and shade on and between tree trunks in the heart of the forest.
Now based in Edinburgh the Artist was born in 1957 in Aberdeen and trained at Gray's School of Art there from 1975-'79. He has exhibited widely since then and his work is featured in many Private, Public and Corporate Collections.
